Image quality

The Nikon Coolpix P1000 has a 1 / 2.3 “BSI-CMOS image sensor, this is a  small sensor, so there is no high image quality to be expected, but compared to other cameras with the same type of sensor, the P1000 is certainly one of the best.

Nikon has preferred to focus on zoom performance and offer a camera that manages to reach incredible distances, rather than perfecting the image quality and for example offering a bridge with a 1-inch sensor, which would have raised the selling price by a lot , such others cameras. The ISO sensitivity range is 100 – 6400. In a nutshell: the camera will have difficulty making good quality photographs when light is poor, so you will inevitably have images with a good amount of digital noise and little detail. The best results are obtained when shooting in optimal light conditions so, on my humbly opinion, is the camera for those who take many photographs outdoors and during the day.

The colors are represented in a balanced way and with a good level of saturation, and the light measurement system does a good job of recognizing the scene and setting the exposure accordingly.

Acting / Performance

The P1000 does a good job of focusing on subjects, unless you work at very long focal lengths.  For photography of very distant subjects, it is necessary to activate the vibration reduction function, so as to be able to counteract the natural movement of the hand and keep the subject in the center of the frame. Excellent for photographing the moon, animals and wild life, for amateur sports, landscapes.

The Camera offers a very, very  good internal stabilization system, which allows you to take photos manually with compensation up to 5 steps. Thanks to this quality, you will be able to compensate for the lack of light by raising the exposure time and still obtaining a good quality image. The stabilization system is particularly useful when shooting in telephoto mode, but above 1500/2000 mm it will still be very difficult to keep the image still without the use of a tripod ( but this is true for all this type of lens ).

Unfortunatly battery life is only about up to 250 shots. The camera is rechargeable via USB cable directly from the camera. You can even buy an external charger and some spare batteries, so you always have a solution available when you’re out for a whole day.

The wireless connections available are WiFi and Bluetooth, with the possibility of connecting the camera to the smartphone/tablet via a dedicated application. The connection is very fast and you can upload pictures ( only in JPG! ) to your device.
